Around 400 people joined the "Clean country" initiative on the World Environment Day for cleaning up the most popular recreational areas in 4 Ukrainian national parks. As a result, about 10 tons of garbage were gathered by the end of the action.
The "Clean Country" initiative aims at raising the public awareness in worsening global environment pollution.
Continuing the good tradition of UN's 'Go Green' campaign - which is supported by the Global Compact Network in Ukraine, the current initiative will be conducted within a joint UNDP/GEF Project "Strengthening governance and financial sustainability of the national protected area system in Ukraine".
At the UN, the World Environment Day is the main instrument for raising the global public awareness of the environmental problems as well as for stimulating the political dialogue and relevant decision making.
"1+1" TV and UNDP invited all those who were interested to join in and help us make Ukraine a cleaner country!
On 6 June, the participants in this nationwide initiative collected rubbish and cleaned the most popular parks. The initiative attracted 378 participants. The youngest participant was 4 years old, with the oldest - being 65 years old.
Activists, representatives from local authorities and communities, UN officers, "1+1" TV Channel journalists, students, schoolchildren collected rubbish within the country's most popular recreational areas.
Specifically, they worked in "Golosiyivskiy" national park in Kyiv, "Hutzulschyna" national park in Kosovo (Ivano-Frankivsk Region), "Swiati Gori" national park in Swiatogorsk (Donetsk Region) and "Schazkiy" national park in Schatsk (Volyn).
In addition to clean-up works, "1+1" TV Channel initiated a specialised ecological information campaign in its news programmes. There were also installed special sign-posts calling to keep the parks tidy.
The theme for World Environment Day 2009 is 'Your Planet Needs You - UNite to Combat Climate Change'. It reflects the urgency for nations to agree on a new deal at the crucial climate convention meeting in Copenhagen some 180 days later in the year, and the links with overcoming poverty and improved management of forests.

Since 2007 The UN Development Programme in Ukraine and the Global Environment Facility implement project "Strengthening governance and financial sustainability of the national protected area system in Ukraine".
The goal of this 4 year project is to secure long-term conservation of biodiversity within Ukraine's Nature Reserve Fund, specifically focusing on protected areas of global, national or regional significance.
The project's objective is to enhance the financial sustainability and strengthen institutional capacity of the PA system in Ukraine. The normative solution will be pursued through the systematic emplacement of ear marked revenue capture mechanisms to complement budgetary subventions to the PA system, and through improvements to PA governance that ensure PA revenue streams are employed efficiently so that impact is optimized per unit of investment.
