“Gene of Equality” short films contest presented in Kyiv, Ukraine

17 June 2011, Kyiv -“Gene of Equality”. That was the name of the contest of short gender films launched in Kyiv today. It aims to raise awareness and attention of the young audience to the issues of gender inequality and domestic violence. The contest is organized by UNDP and EU Delegation to Ukraine together with State Service for youth and sport of Ukraine. Among jury members: famous artists- Pavlo Gudimov and Evgeniya Gapchynska, producer Viktor Pryduvalov, singer Jamala,  MTV Ukraine  Director Andriy Urenov, Olympic champion Denis Silantiev and others.

Opening the presentation Elena Panova, UNDP Deputy Country Director noted that «gender equality is an imperative for a prosperous and fair civil society and development progress. Everyone should have the chance to succeed in life - women, men, girls and boys.»

Bianca Baumler, Communications Manager, EU Delegation to Ukraine noted that gender equality it is a fundamental human right and a question of social justice. “Gender equality is essential for growth and poverty reduction, and it is key to reaching the Millennium Development Goals and to building the harmony in society”.

Sergiy Gluschenko, Deputy Head of State Service for youth and sport stressed that gender equality is not only a women’s issue: «It’s the problem of modern democratic society as a whole. It is a common fight for a more democratic and harmonious society, for increase of production, for economic efficiency».

The top-sight of the exhibition was the unique in Eastern Europe collection of the Kharkiv Gender Equality Museum. Furthermore, featured different informational and educational campaign on gender equality and domestic violence prevention from all over the world. Examples of sexism in advertising and media as well as cases of gender inequality in daily life were also on display.

The participants of the contest will be able to practice and enhance their creative skills in the thematic summer camp. In this camp cinema professionals will conduct master-classes of scenario skills, operator tools and producing work. The culmination of the summer camp will be the GenderFilmFest scheduled for September, where best creations will be presented and winners awarded.

Additional Information:

In Ukraine, 50% of population suffer from domestic violence. More than 90% of victims are women. Women earn 30% less salary than men, work more and take care of the household. More often than not, women have to work twice as much as men. On the other hand, men spend more time at work and less time with their families, are more susceptible to bad habits and as a result live 12 years less than women.

 Information about the contest:

The contest of gender short films “Gene of Equality” was initiated by UNDP Ukraine with the financial support of EU Delegation to Ukraine. The organization and conduct of the contest is ensured by  Equal Opportunities and Women’s Rights in Ukraine Programme.

The contest will be conducted in Ukraine from 1 June to 10 September 2011. Age of contestants: 18-35.  Contestants will present video films no longer than 5 minutes. Films will fall into two nominations: “5 minutes on gender equality” and “5 minutes on domestic violence prevention”. Works must be submitted to the following address: Esplanadna street 20, office 701, 01601 Kyiv.

Winners will be selected by a competent jury. Jury members: gender experts, famous artists such as Pavlo Gudimov and Evgeniya Gapchynska, producer Viktor Pryduvalov, singer Jamala, Head of MTV Ukraine Andriy Urenov, sportsman Denis Silantiev and others.

The main goal of the contest is to raise awareness and attention of the young audience to the issues of gender inequality and domestic violence. The contest will last from 1 June to 10 September 2010. In the framework of the contest a summer camp (“GenderCamp”) will organized for selected participants. A festival of short films, GenderFilmFest, will be conducted in Kyiv on 30 September 2011.
